Assistance Needed for Pilot Program to Keep School Students Connected
As schools begin the 2020-2021 year with remote learning or hybrid models, the Central Ohio Broadband Access Pilot Program is providing low-income, K-12 students and their families with low-cost internet access. The lack of a reliable and affordable internet connection and device to access the internet makes remote learning impossible and causes more students to fall behind. This program seeks to address the inequities that that exist community to community.
This Central Ohio Broadband Access Pilot Program is a public-private program that is addressing immediate digital device and access needs by delivering refurbished PCs and hotspot devices with 12 months of unlimited broadband access.
The collaborative project is being made possible through the generosity of private funders, in addition to public funders and federal CARES Act funding. Businesses and organizations can participate by providing financial support or by donating used computers that can be refurbished for program participants.
Thanks to a local partnership program, the families of Central Ohio school students can receive a computer and internet access at low cost. Businesses and organizations can help by providing financial assistance and donating computers. Find out more at www.morpc.org/broadband.
The program will provide refurbished computers and hotspot devices for families to set up an internet signal using cell phone signals. No new infrastructure or professional installation required.

RE: Reporting 1099 Identity Theft Update
Recently, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) launched new resources for Ohioans who may be the victim of identity theft and unemployment fraud. Those who believe their identity has been compromised and used to file a fraudulent unemployment claim should follow these steps:
1. Visit unemployment.ohio.gov, click on “Report Identity Theft,” and complete the secure online form. As an alternative, individuals may call (833) 658-0394, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Calls outside those hours may be answered by other agents in the call center.
2. Follow the IRS guidance to taxpayers on identity theft involving unemployment benefits.
3. Take steps to protect their identity by following the guidance posted on the ODJFS website.
Unfortunately, identity theft is a widespread national challenge. Many Ohioans have become victims, and their identities used to file fraudulent unemployment claims in both the traditional unemployment and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance programs. In many cases, individuals become aware their identity was compromised when they receive a 1099-G form or other notification referencing unemployment benefits they never applied for or received.
ODJFS is grateful to its partners for helping to spread the word about these resources. Thank you for your time and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations
